At the 5th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland the Polish artist received the award of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
In the year 2016 on the initiative of the Graphics Department of the MKE (Hungarian Universtiy of Fine Arts), with the support of the university leadership and due to the approval of the Senat, we founded an MKE Award at the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland, which assures for the awarded artist the possibility to have an individual exhibition in the Aula of the universtiy. For the first time the exposition of the awarded artist Cristian Opris took place in 2017, this year the awarded exhibition will be organized from the art works of the excellent Polish contemporary artist Marcin Bialas.
Marcin Bialas Polish graphic artist is an internationally well-known and recognized creator. He graduated the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice with honours and since then he has been teaching at this university. His works are characterized by the thorough knowledge and versatile application of the traditional graphic procedures, especially of the technique of intaglio. In course of creating his carefully elaborated graphic works he broadly makes use of the possibilities offered by the intaglio technique full of shades and strong contrasts. Another characteristic of his works is the extremely complex representation of architectural motifs. The unusually complex constructions created though with high geometrical precision and exactness are transparent and comprehensible due to the special structure analysing technique of the artist. The gloomy phalanstery of the stair constructions, labyrinths and spacial sections, monumentality and a strange world of hidden secrets of the space and distances reveal themselves in his works. The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland celebrates its 10th anniversary in the year 2020. On the 14th of January the organizers presented within the framework of a press conference the concept of this year’s edition, they spoke about the novelties and about the structure of this biennial.
The biennial to be organized for the 6th time now is an excellent occasion for the organizers as well to sum up the experiences of the past decade in order to use them successfully by the organisation of the next event of this kind.
The exhibitions presented so far within the framework of this international contest, as well as the professional quality and the quantity of the submitted artworks have confirmed, that the development of graphic techniques respectively the development of different visual representation forms manifesting themselves through these, is continuous.
Zoltán Vécsi Nagy, leader of the Transylvanian Art Centre welcomed the representatives of the press and declared: „The Transylvanian Art Centre is one of the beneficiaries of the biennial, as the winner artworks, which become part of the art collection of this institution, raise the level of the exhibitions selected from this collection, providing an international background. Through this we can not only show our openness towards the world, but we can also demonstrate, that indeed, the regional artworks represented through our institution are competitive in comparison with the contemporary art of the world.”
Apor Ferencz S., the curator of the biennial presented to the represantatives of the press the concept of this edition and the novelties respectively changes regarding the event.

The G6 is looking forward for answers from artists of different nationalities, belonging to various cultures, being eager to find out their attitude towards the issues of their own environment and of the whole world manifested through the language of contemporary graphic art. What kind of answers do they give to questions concerning globalization, politics, economy or other social issues? How do they represent the problems of their immediate environment or their individual life through their art, how do they consider possible to represent through the language of contemporary graphic art tradition and complete revival alike?
„I would like to highlight as a real professional progress the trilateral cooperation agreement, which we concluded with the renowned organisation office of the International Graphic Art Triennial Krakow and with the leaders of Miskolc Galery, organizers of the Miskolc Graphic Art Triennial. In this way we are able to promote each other’s events, to share our experiences, to organize exchange programs between artists and exhibitions, to award prizes at each other’s events. The winner of the Krakow Award given at the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland will have the opportunity to show his/her artworks in an individual exhibition in Krakow.” – said Apor Ferencz S..
The concerned professionals can sign in until the 20th of March 2020, exclusively on web interface and can apply for the contest on the web page of the biennial through an online form. The selected artworks will make up the material of the catalogue respectively of the exhibition of the biennial. The opening and the award ceremonies of this year’s biennial will take place on the 9th of October 2020 in the Transylvanian Centre of Art in Sfântu Gheorghe. Before this, the exhibition of the Chinese fine artist Jing Liu, winner of the previous biennial, will be opened. In addition, the programms of the biennial will be enriched this year by further side-events in more towns of Szeklerland.
István Imreh, manager of the Covasna County Cultural Centre presented the organizers and sponsors, then he added: „The event is carried out through the common organisatory work of three counties, after several years of absence county Mures, represented by Mures County Museum, is also more active in the organisation work, as it will host the exhibition of the selected material of the 2020 biennial.” In addition he emphasized, that one of the objectives of G6 is to make the artworks more interpretable and available for the general public.
The organisatory work of the event will be carried out with the common participation of the Covasna County Cultural Centre, of Covasna, Harghita and Mures County Councils, of the Cultural and Art Centre of Lăzarea and of Mures County Museum.

G6 awaits those art works as well, which are not primarily concerned about the definition of the ideal of beauty but they rather look for its problematization. Therefore the organizers propose that the key words of the 6th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland should be enclosed in the title „The Structure of Chaos”. Chaos means in this context the insecurity of predictability and order bears the sense of exact geometric structure or previsibility, respectively there are also implied here the eventual sociological, political, cultural, ecological and economical aspects of these ideas.
In the spirit of the ideas above,
the organizers of the biennial expect the submission of printed graphics created with the following procedures:
– graphic artworks created with traditional procedures of graphic art;
– graphic artworks created with digital methods of image creation and printed
with digital devices;
– graphic artworks prepared with digital methods of image creation but printed
with traditional methods.

PARTICIPANTS
Professional artists and art university students may participate in the
biennial if their application is in conformity with the Terms and Conditions
included in the Call for Application.
Associations, professional organizations and other
groups cannot apply. The artists can apply to the biennial only
personally.
2. CRITERIA OF ARTWORKS TO BE SUBMITTED
– The topic of the artworks can be freely chosen.
– The paper size of the artworks must be minimum 30×30 cm, and maximum 100×100 cm.
– The submitted graphic artwork has been created in the past two years.
– All artworks created with printed graphics procedures are accepted, included in the definition of graphics in terms of high, low and plain print methods (woodcut and linocut, aquaforte, aquatint, mezzotint, lithography, screen printing, individual print, C-print, offset, electrographics, etc.).
– Every artist may participate with maximum 3 artworks. Every submitted artwork counts as 1 artwork. The elements of a series count as separate artworks; thus, a three-element series counts as three artworks.
– Artworks created in pencil, pastel, coal, ink and other individual, that is not multiplication procedures as well as photos printed without any image manipulation or reproductions of artworks (paintings, sculptures, installations, performances, etc.) are not accepted.
3. SUBMISSION
Submission is only possible on the following website, via the online entry form: Entry form 2020
The digital reproductions of the artworks can be uploaded online, via the entry form, together with the required data.
Parameters of digital reproductions:
– the file size of the digital image may not exceed 15 MB;
– the digital images can be uploaded in uncompressed jpg, jpge or png format, 300 dpi resolution;
– the longer size must be minimum 2500 pixels.
If the uploading was successful, the system will send a confirmation message to the e-mail address specified in the filled-in entry form. If you might have problems with online registration, please contact the organizers on the following e-mail: grafikaibiennale@gmail.com
The deadline of submitting the digital reproductions is March 20, 2020, midnight, 12:00 (UTC+2).
Important! With submission the applicants assume that, if their submitted works are selected by the jury, they will send the original artworks by post or will submit them to the biennial in person. The organizers do not assume the printing of the artworks or the refunding of printing costs!
Important! For the phase of preselection please don’t send the original artworks by post! If this is the case, we are unable to send back the original artworks.
4. ENTRY FEE
There is no entry fee
for the 6th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland.
5. SELECTION OF THE ARTWORKS, EVALUATION BY
THE JURY
The members of the jury are internationally acknowledged art historians and
artists.
The evaluation will take place in two phases: preselection and the selection of
the awarded artworks.
The decisions of the jury cannot be overridden.
5/a Preselection
The preselection will take place based on the digital reproductions of the
artworks to be submitted.
The jury will select the artworks that qualify for the second phase; these
artworks will be included in the catalogue of the biennial.
All participants will be informed on the results of preselection via e-mail.
5/b Sending the artworks qualifying for the second phase by post
The original artworks must be sent by post or submitted to the biennial in person.
Please attach to the submitted artworks the printed entry form received via e-mail during online registration in the first phase. The artworks must be numbered and signed in accordance with the international graphics standards.
Original graphic artworks must be submitted without their frames or mat boards, in portfolios or carton reels.

6. EXHIBITION AND AWARDING
The artworks selected for the second phase will be exhibited in the course of the biennial depending on the exhibition surface and the ranking of the jury.
Venue: Transylvanian Art Center, Sfântu Gheorghe.
Official opening of the biennial: Friday, October 9, 2020, 5 PM
The authors of the artworks will be informed on the decision of the jury and the details of the opening ceremony by post, phone or via e-mail.
7. FURTHER INFORMATION
– The awarded artworks will remain in the property of the Transylvanian Art Center.
– Each artist may donate his work, extending in this way the graphic collection of the Transylvanian Art Centre. You can express this intention by the completion of the application form.
– After the exhibitions of the Biennial the exhibited artworks will be sent back to their authors by post within one year. The donated works constitute an exception here.
– The selected artworks will be included in the biennial’s catalogue.
– The organizers of the biennial reserve the right to organize the exhibitions.
Submission implies the acceptance of the terms and conditions of participation in the biennial!
We are pleased to announce that on June the 11th the International Print Triennial Society in Krakow, represented by Marta Anna Raczek-Karcz, the Hermann Ottó Museum and Gallery from Miskolc, represented by Kónya Ábel, and the Covasna County Cultural Center, represented by Imreh- Marton István, signed a collaboration agreement in Krakow in
the presence of curators Apor Ferncz S. and István Erőss on supporting each other’s professional initiatives, events and on implementing long-term professional partnership in the domain of graphic art.
The contract includes exchange of professional experience, coordination of the concepts and events of these three big Graphic Art Biennials, common planning and reciprocal exchange of exhibitions. Beside delegating jury members and offering opportunities for the awarded artists to present their artworks, the parties will participate together in tenders of the European Union and will mutually promote each other’s events. The signing of this document once again proves the high level of trust between the three parties.
Jing Liu Chinese artist received the Grand Prize of the biennial
On the 13th of October 2018 the exhibition of the 5th Graphic Art Biennial has been opened in the Transylvanian Art Center of Sfântu Gheorghe. The Awards Gala took place at the Tamási Áron Theatre, where the organizers presented the awarded artists and art works of the biennial. The Grand Prize was awarded to the Chinese artist Jing Liu for his series entitled Masters.
At the opening ceremony of the exhibition Zoltán Vécsi Nagy, director of the Transylvanian Art Center welcomed the public, he emphasized, that this event had already crossed the boundaries of Szeklerland:
“The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has arrived now in truth in Europe. We have grown by now to the level of a real European biennial”.
Then Apor Ferencz S., the curator of the biennial evaluated the event, saying, that the 2250 art works of more than 900 artists from 58 countries submitted to the contest show clearly, that the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has become a professional event appreciated in the whole world, being at the same time one of the most important artistic events of the region.
“One of the most positive aspects of this biennial beside the quality of the works is that the artists responded in great number to the issues raised by the concept of this biennial: they addressed the complex questions regarding the relation between the pixel based image and traditional graphics, at which point and how do the traditional and digital technical solutions meet, what kind of interactions do these overlappings bring about and what kind of actual intellectual contents do they represent”.– pointed out Apor Ferencz S..
Art historian Iréne Kányádi, lecturer of Partium Christian University held the opening speech: “The great number of the submitted artworks lead more and more to the growing of the professional level, so we can declare now, that the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland is crossing more and more confidently the boundaries of the region to meet the international standards.” – she phrased.
Beside the art works of the inland artists the art works submitted to the biennial came from various countries of the world: Hungary, Poland, Russia, Serbia, China, India, Bangladesh, Nepal respectively Taiwan and Vietnam. The jury selected 294 art works to the exhibition this year. Some of these works can be visited at the Transylvanian Art Center, some others are exhibited in the conference room of the Székely Mikó College.
The Awards Gala and the awarded artists
The Grand Prize of the biennial worth 2000 euro, offered by Perla Harghitei, was awarded to the Chinese artist Jing Liu for his series entitled Masters.
The prize named after Pál Nagy offered by Mureș county was awarded to Jakub Jaszewszki (Poland) for his works Xfirewall and Xerror. Zoltán Novák Csaba, senator of Mureș county transmitted the message of his county: “There is no life without culture and no society can function without culture. That is why it is worth to invest in such events, because if we have a rich culture, we will have a future, too.”– he formulated.
The prize named after Imre Nagy offered by Harghita county was awarded to Art Werger (United States) for his work Life Below. “The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland is very important for us in many respects, it can contribute to a more emphasized presence of Szeklerland on the cultural map of Europe.” – pointed out Csaba Borboly, president of Harghita County Council with the occasion of his speech at this event.
Samira Zamani (Germany) won the prize named after Sándor Plugor offered by Covasna county with her work entitled Back In The Day. Sándor Tamás, president of Covasna County Council mentioned, that the decade-long organizing work around this event seems to come to an accomplishment. The organizers of the event put all their energy into the work, so that the premature and unexpected death of curator Zsolt Siklodi would not interrupt the process: “The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland is the result of the common thinking of this region. Right from the start we had had three main objectives: to define ourselves through the language of the art, to show Szeklerland to contemporary artist around the world, as it represents truly a cultural specialty in the Carpathian Basin and last but not least, to present for the home public the main contemporary tendencies of graphic art around the world.” – emphasized the president of the council.
The prizes offered by the three counties of Szeklerland are 1000 euro worth each of them. Csilla Hegedűs, executive vice president of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, responsible for cultural issues was present at the event, too. She said: “A community that can put through such an event meeting international standards, is a living community which develops and grows. We do not only show ourselves to the Romanian society, but we also step out into Europe, into the wide world. The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has a kind of ambassador role concerning culture, community- building and unity.”
The Consulate General of Hungary in Miercurea Ciuc offered the prize of 500 euro to Răzvan Anton (Romania) for his work Fading Study. At the same time the prize offered by the Cultural and Art Center of Lăzarea along with the possibility of the participation in the art camp of Lăzarea went to Liza Lehoczki (Hungary) for her works Everything is more beautiful in pink 1, 2 and 3.
Éva Mayer (Hungary) won the prize of the Pulzus Art Camp for her works Imprints 1 and 2, the 500 euro prize of Zereda Art Camp 500 went to Ágota Krnács (Hungary) for her work Apparition in Cered 3 – The second alas is gone. The prize of the Institute of Visual Arts of the Eszterházy Károly University of Eger went to Kinga-Noémi Ács (Romania) for her work entitled Hunyadi Square 2.
The jury awarded five Nivo Prizes to the graphic artists Łukasz Koniuszy (Poland), Haruhiko Yoshinaga (Japan), Zoran Mishe (Bulgaria), Liu Fu (China) and Haider Ali Jan (Pakistan). The prize offered by the Hungarian University of Fine Arts went to Marcin Bialas (Poland).
The organizers of the biennial associated graphic art with jazz music, like they used to in former years, too. This year the awards gala was enriched with the jazz concert of the Luiza Zan and Sárik Péter Duo.
The works selected by the international jury can be visited in Sfântu Gheorghe at the Transylvanian Art Centre and at the Székely Mikó College until the 9th of November. In December some works of the biennial will be exhibited in Miercurea Ciuc as well.
The main sponsors of the 5th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland are the National Cultural Fond of Hungary, Bertis and Perla Harghitei.

On the 12th of October from 7 o’clock p.m. a book launch with exhibition entitled “The documents of an uncompleted oeuvre” took place in the House of Arcades in Sfântu Gheorghe. The exhibition pays tribute to the memory of the former curator of the Graphic Art Biennial, Zsolt Siklodi.
Apor Ferencz S., one of the editors of the book and curator of the exhibition welcomed those who came to the event, then he presented some moments of the process of birth of the book and of the exhibition: “I think, that the most difficult thing in course of the editing of the book and the set-up of the material of the book was to be confronted to the fact, that here we should give an account of the documents of an unfinished life work. It was also hard to give a overall view of a life work, without defining its structure along emotional ties. Yet, although we treated the whole material on basis of strictly professional criteria, this work could not be free of emotions.”
The curator of the exhibition spoke about the editing of the book as well. At the end of the book edited in three languages: Hungarian, Romanian and English readers will find a passage of the curriculum vitae written by Zsolt Siklodi himself in a very personal tone.
Then graphic artist István Erőss, professor of the Institute of Visual Arts of the Eszterházy Károly University of Fine Arts of Eger, close friend of Zsolt Siklodi turned to the visitors of the event: “As I was looking at the exhibition, I was thinking, that it should have happened much earlier to collect and present a complete image of the work of Zsolt Siklodi. But then I came to the conclusion, that this could naturally not have happened, because beside the great and versatile organizing work, that he assumed, he hardly had any time to show the products of his professional activity. Looking at the works presented here, we can see, that he used a plenty of technical solutions in his graphic art and had a quite experimental attitude in matters of art. Through his organizing work we also got to know a person who was very active, restless and permanently open to the new. Thus these two activities were always in a kind of symbiosis, nothing was impossible for him. Eternal restlessness kept him alive until his last hour and this attitude obliges us as well.”
Finally one of the authors of the book, Kata Ungvári-Zrínyi praised the selection of works presented at the memorial exhibition of Zsolt Siklodi. The exhibition can be visited until the 2nd of November 2018.

On the 12th of November 2018 the opening ceremony of the individual exhibition of the Polish graphic artist Kamil KOCUREK took place in the Keresztes House in Sfântu Gheorghe. Those present at the event were welcomed by the curator of the exhibition Magdalena Hanysz-Stefańska, who presented the artist.
Kamil Kocurek was born in 1990 in Tychy, Poland. He finished secondary school in Katowice in 2010. Then he studied art at the Faculty of Art of the Academy of Fine Art sin Katowice. After graduating from the academy, he became professor at the Graphic Art Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. He participated actively in artistic events and graphic art contests in Poland and abroad. He was also present in many individual and group exhibitions and won more than 25 awards. In 2016 he was awarded the Grand Prize at the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland.
Magdalena thanked to the organizers for the possibility and for the support received for the organization of this exhibition, she expressed her gratitude, that they could bring this exhibition to Sfântu Gheorghe. She called Kamil Kocurek the hero of the day, as she put it, Kamil Kocurek represents the voice of a new generation. “Graphics links people” – the curator of the exhibition emphasized at the end of her speech.
The individual exhibition of Kamil Kocurek entitled “Arena of Games” shows artworks created between 2014 and 2018 with intaglio printing. All of these works and the concepts behind them are rooted in the personal interests of the artist: “I draw attention to the atrocities of war and the ongoing blurring of the boundaries between the real and the virtual world. The modern world is based on the games. These games permeate every aspect of our life. Media still participate in this fun so we see the manipulation of information to form an alternative view of reality. Military conflict and the violence are a basic material of manipulation and surrounding us from every side.”
The exhibition can be visited until the 9th of November 2018 in the Keresztes House (Gróf Mikó Imre street, no. 9), daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., except Mondays

Jazz concert of the Luiza Zan and Péter Sárik Duo on the 5th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland
The organizers of the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland traditionally combine graphics with jazz music.
On the 13th of October, in the framework of the Awards Gala of the 5th Graphic Art Biennial the jazz concert of the Luiza Zan and Péter Sárik Duo will take place in the great hall of the Tamási Áron Theatre from 6 p.m.
Luiza Zan singer from Romania and Péter Sárik, jazz pianist of Hungary have been playing together in a duo since 2013. Their formation is very successful in their home countries.
Their music is a blending of many styles: traditional and modern jazz, Romanian and Hungarian folk music, respectively classical music. Their most outstanding characteristics are the very energetic interpretation and the diverse repertoire which has made them popular very soon.
Luiza Zan is owner of several awards. After her home success, in 2003 she received the special award of the jury at the Jazz Contest in Montreux, one of the most important jazz competitions of the world, in 2004 she was the second in that competition. She is familiar with all styles, being deeply instinctive and very intellectual at the same time.
Péter Sárik has also received a lot of awards both as a pianist and as a composer.
He has got the Artisjus, Emerton, Orszácky awards and he has also received the Fonogram award twice. In 2016 he got the title “Musician of the Year”.
The entry to the concert is free.
