The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has become a significant international forum of graphic art and this has been confirmed again by the quantity and quality of the submitted works to the call of the biennial of this year. The importance of G7 is also is also evident if we consider that this year artists from 62 countries have sent works to the contest. Similarly to the preceding event of the biennial, the Hungarian, Romanian and Polish lines are still the strongest, but this year the representation of some countries from South-America and a series of countries of the East, including Thailand, India, China or Taiwan has become more pronounced. During the application period of ten weeks nearly 2000 works from 844 artists have been submitted.

The deadline of the 7th Graphic Art Biennial was on March 23 at midnight, and after that the first phase of the jurying session took place during the period from March 29 to March 31.

The jury of G7 is composed by internationally recognized representatives of graphic art: Prof. dr. Bogdan Achimescu, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Prof. dr. István Erőss,  rector of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Prof. dr. Adriana Lucaciu, professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the West University of Temesvár/Timișoara, dr. Andrea Pézman, assistant professor at the Graphic Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, dr. Beáta Bordás, art historian and director of the Transylvanian Art Centre in Sfântu Gheorghe, dr. József Szurcsik, vice-rector of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, head of department associate professor and Apor Ferencz S. artist, curator of the biennial.

Soon we are going to publish the list of the selected works on the website of the biennial.

The G7’s deadline has been extended

The 7th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland will be organized this year

The call of G7 is already available for the artists from inland and abroad

In the course of the year 2022 the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland will take place for the seventh occasion. Beyond raising the professional standards of the contest, it is the declared objective of the organizers that the event expands more and more, remaining an important international forum of contemporary graphic art.  The details of this year’s event were presented at a press conference.

István Imreh, manager of Covasna County Cultural Centre spoke about the plans of this year regarding the event. He highlighted, that the biennial is waiting for the visitors with a renewed design on the website gbiennial.ro. „We are glad that we have managed to come over the difficulties of the 2020 event and we hope that this year we can turn back to the usual, efficient practices of the organization and running of the event. This year’s edition will be extended by new locations too, as Miercurea-Ciuc joined the events of the biennial as partner, thus the core material of the contest will be exposed at the National Museum of Ciuc, where further side events will take place, too. In partnership with the Hungarian University of Fine Arts from Budapest, we would also like to expand the list of short films presenting different procedures and techniques, which were so successful last year among visitors. In this way we would like to bring this genre closer to the general public.” – said István Imreh.

Apor Ferencz S., curator of the biennial presented the thematic and objective of the event.

The main goal of the G7 remains in the future, too, to bring into focus the tendencies of contemporary graphic art and to provide an overall picture of the modern trends and development of printmaking techniques. It should trace and identify, respectively it should point out those interactions, which could bring about the different fusions of traditional and experimental graphic procedures. The changed circumstances, the experience of being constrained make us all reevaluate our vision of the future. Following different strategies, we are seeking for solutions to the unanswered questions of these uncertain times. Accordingly, the organizers of the biennial propose as catchphrase of the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland of the year 2022 the title Strategies.” – declared Apor Ferencz S..

Beáta Bordás, manager of the Transylvanian Art Centre, said that although she had not taken part in the organization of the biennial before, she was looking forward to the collaboration with great excitement: „We are hosting this event with enthusiasm this year, too. We are going to provide the exhibition rooms both on the ground floor and on the third floor for the presentation of the works in the period between the 7th of October and the 26th of November. We consider that it is important that the awarded works should be added to the collection of EMŰK (Transylvanian Art Centre), furthermore our goal is to go on tour with this material and to present it at other locations as well.” The manager of the Transylvanian Art Centre emphasized, that it is a particular pleasure, that also other cultural institutions have joined the event and that they can work together as partners on this occasion.

Furthermore Apor Ferencz S. related, that after the exhibition of the 7th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland, the retrospective exhibition of the graphic artist Líviusz Gyulai originating from Erdővidék (microregion from Szeklerland) would take place at EMŰK in Sfântu Gheorghe, as special side event of the series of events of the biennial. At the same time at the National Museum of Ciuc the material of the 2nd Budapest Illustration Festival will be presented.

On the occasion of the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland organized for the 7th time this year, we are looking forward to the application of all those graphic artists and art students who are devoted to work with different traditional, digital and printmaking techniques.

The artists concerned can apply exclusively online until 20th March 2022. Registration is possible on the website of the biennial, by filling in an online form. The works selected to participate in the contest will be included in the catalogue of the biennial, respectively they will be part of the material of the exhibition. You can find further information about the call for application and about the rules on the website www.gbiennial.ro.

The official opening ceremony of the biennial will take place on Friday, the seventh of October 2022 at the Transylvanian Art Centre in Sfântu Gheorghe. Before this, the exhibition of the thailandese artist Mettrai Pongchomporn, winner of last year contest, will be opened. The exhibitions made up of the selected works of the biennial will be shown to the public both at the National Museum of Ciuc in Miercurea-Ciuc and in Odorheiu-Secuiesc.

The biennial is a joint event co-organized by Covasna County Cultural Centre, the County Councils of Covasna, Harghita and Mureș, the Cultural and Art Centre of Lăzarea, respectively the Mureș County Museum.

You can find further details on the official homepage of the biennial www.gbiennial.ro, respectively on the site www.facebook.com/grafikaiszemle.

Call for Application, 2022

The 7th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland, Sfântu Gheorghe, 2022

The Covasna, Harghita and Mureş County Councils, together with the Cultural Center of Covasna County, the Lăzarea Cultural and Creation Center and the Mureș County Museum, announce the application for the 7th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland.

The organization of the 6th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland was hugely influenced by the pandemic situation, as a consequence of which we were compelled to transfer our events into the online space. But in spite of the challenges generated by the pandemic, this year we will do everything to create the conditions, which offer a suitable space for a professional contest. We seek to maintain this event as an important international platform of contemporary graphics.

The main goal of the G7 remains in the future, too, to bring into focus the tendencies of contemporary graphic art and to provide an overall picture of the current trends and development of printmaking techniques.

Accordingly, the organizers of the biennial propose as a catchphrase of the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland of the year 2022 the title Strategies.

In the hope that the products of the creative sensitivity of the applying artists will constitute an excellent imprint of the events of the recent times, we look forward to receiving your application, being confident that the events planned for October 2022 will take place to their full extent.
